Body image

Body image is the relationship we have with our body and appearance. They way we feel about ourselves can be influenced by our size, weight, gender identity, or how our bodies function.

Having concerns about body image is very common, but for some, it can lead to mental health problems if not addressed early.

Reaching out for support and treatment can improve self-esteem and self-acceptance, both of which are important for physical and mental wellbeing.

Who can help me in the NT?

If you are unsure about who to talk to or who can help, a good place to start is your local GP. If you live in a small town or community, your local health clinic or community service are the best places to go, as they can refer you to specialist support.

  • General Practitioner (GP) or doctor

If you are worried about your body image, a good place to start is to speak with a General Practitioner (GP), also known as a doctor.

A GP can help talk through with you issues you are experiencing and depending on your needs, may refer you to a counsellor, psychologist, psychiatrist or other mental health professional.

  • Remote health service

If you live in a community without access to a GP clinic, you'll most likely have a health service in or near your community. This local service can support your health needs and may have Aboriginal health workers and nurses who can help you find the right support.

  • Community based mental health services

Community based mental health services support individuals and carers with emerging or present mental health issues. They can also help with issues of addiction, relationships, grief, domestic violence; and housing or financial hardship.
